How It Actually Works
The technical story behind "it just works everywhere"
Start Here: Why This Design?
Before diving into the technical details, read Design Philosophy to understand why this system uses JBOD over ZFS pools, native gaming over VM passthrough, and btrfs per drive. It explains the trade-offs and who this system is built for.
Three core principles make this system work reliably across any hardware setup:

Container Runtime
IMPORTANT: This stack runs on Docker (with sudo), NOT Podman.
# Verify Docker is running
sudo docker ps
# Socket location
/var/run/docker.sock
# Do NOT use podman - it creates separate container instances and causes conflictsCore Architecture Principles
Principle #1: Works With Your Hardware
Auto-detects and optimizes for whatever you have
The system finds your GPU and configures hardware acceleration automatically:
- Current Setup: AMD Radeon 780M (VCN 4.0) with VA-API in Tdarr
- NVIDIA RTX: 60+ FPS 4K transcoding (vs 2-5 FPS CPU-only)
- Any GPU: AMD, Intel, even Raspberry Pi get optimized configs
- No GPU: Works fine, just uses CPU (still faster than most setups)
Performance Gains & Technical Details
Real Performance Results (AMD Radeon 780M):
- 4K HEVC Transcoding: 2-5 FPS (CPU) -> 60+ FPS (GPU) = 1200% improvement
- Power Consumption: 200W (CPU) -> 50W (GPU) = 75% reduction
- Concurrent Streams: 2 streams -> 8+ streams = 4x capacity
- Quality: Standard -> HDR10+ with tone mapping
GPU Passthrough Configuration:
# docker-compose.yml (Tdarr)
devices:
- /dev/dri:/dev/driVA-API Codec Support (VCN 4.0):
| Codec | Decode | Encode |
|---|---|---|
| H.264/AVC | Yes | Yes |
| HEVC/H.265 | Yes | Yes |
| VP9 | Yes | No |
| AV1 | Yes | No |
Supported Hardware:
- AMD Radeon 780M (current): RDNA 3, VCN 4.0, VA-API/AMF acceleration
- NVIDIA RTX: NVENC/NVDEC acceleration
- Intel: QuickSync acceleration
- Raspberry Pi: VideoCore optimization
- Performance Profiles: Dedicated (100%), High (75%), Balanced (50%), Light (25%), Dev (10%)
Principle #2: Works With Your Storage
Use any drives, anywhere, anytime
Detects all your storage and lets you pick what to use:
- Any filesystem: ZFS, exFAT, cloud drives, whatever
- Portable drives: Take exFAT drives camping, plug them back in later
- Cloud storage: Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive all work
- Hot-swap: Add/remove drives without breaking anything
Storage Discovery & Management Details
What Gets Detected:
- Local drives: ZFS, Btrfs, ext4, exFAT, NTFS
- Cloud mounts: Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, rclone mounts
- Network storage: NFS, SMB/CIFS shares
- JBOD arrays: Multiple drives working independently
How Hot-Swap Works:
- Plug in drive -> System detects it automatically
- Add to pool ->
usenet storage add /media/your-drive - Services update -> All apps can immediately use the new storage
- No restart needed -> Everything keeps running
Real Example: 29 drives detected including 8TB NVMe, multiple cloud drives totaling 10+ TB

Keep configs on the OneDrive-backed disk so backups/versioning are automatic.
Principle #3: Secure & Simple Access
Access everything from anywhere, safely
No complicated networking or VPN setup needed:
- One domain: Everything at
*.beppesarrstack.netwith automatic SSL - Zero open ports: Cloudflare tunnel handles all access securely
- Works anywhere: Home, work, mobile, friend's house
- No configuration: DNS and certificates handled automatically
Security & Network Technical Details
How Security Works:
- Cloudflare Tunnel: Outbound-only connections, no ports exposed
- Automatic SSL/TLS: Certificates managed automatically
- Domain: beppesarrstack.net configured with DNS
- Access Control: Can add authentication layers if needed
Network Architecture:
- Zero Trust: No direct internet exposure
- High Availability: Cloudflare's global network
- Fast Access: CDN acceleration for static content
- Mobile Optimized: Works perfectly on phones/tablets
